Paulo César Carpegiani, born on February 7, 1949, in Erechim, Brazil, is a famous Brazilian footballer and coach. He played as a midfielder, which is a player who helps both attack and defend in the middle of the field. After his playing days, he became a very successful football manager.

Playing Football: Carpegiani's Career on the Field
Paulo César Carpegiani started his professional football journey at Sport Club Internacional in Porto Alegre. He played there from 1970 to 1977. During this time, his team won the Brazilian Championship twice, in 1975 and 1976. These were big wins for his club!
After his time at Internacional, Carpegiani moved to Flamengo. He played for Flamengo from 1977 to 1980. With Flamengo, he won another Brazilian Championship in 1980. This showed he was a key player for top teams in Brazil.
Coaching Teams: Carpegiani's Managerial Success
After he stopped playing, Paulo César Carpegiani began a new career as a football coach. He quickly found success.
Early Coaching Triumphs
His first coaching job was with Flamengo, the same club he played for. As a coach, he led Flamengo to amazing victories. In 1981, they won the Copa Libertadores de América, which is a huge club competition in South America. They also won the Intercontinental Cup that year, beating the famous English team Liverpool. Carpegiani also guided Flamengo to another Brazilian Championship title in 1982.
Coaching Around the World
Carpegiani coached many different teams throughout his career. In 1992, he coached Barcelona Sporting Club in Ecuador. He also had a short time coaching Corinthians in Brazil in 2007.
Leading National Teams
One of his most notable coaching achievements was with the Paraguay national team. He coached them from 1996 to 1998. Under his leadership, Paraguay had a strong performance in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where they only lost to France in extra time. France later went on to win the World Cup that year!
After his time with Paraguay, Carpegiani continued to coach various clubs in Brazil, including Vitória in 2009 and Atlético Paranaense in 2010. He also coached São Paulo from 2010 to 2011. His last coaching roles were with Coritiba, Bahia, Flamengo, and Vitória in 2018.
