Esporte Clube Vitória is a professional football club from Salvador, Brazil. It was started on May 13, 1899. The team plays in Brazil's top football league, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. They also compete in the Campeonato Baiano, which is the main football league in the Bahia state.

Vitória plays its home games at their own stadium, Manoel Barradas. This stadium can hold over 30,000 fans. The team's uniform is red and black striped shirts, black shorts, and black socks. Over the years, the stripes on their shirts have changed. They have been vertical, horizontal, wide, and narrow.

Vitória is famous for its amazing youth academy. This is where young players learn and train to become professional footballers. Between 1995 and 2000, their youth teams won at least 21 international titles. Many famous players started their careers at Vitória. These include Bebeto, Vampeta, Dida, David Luiz, and Hulk.

The biggest rival of Vitória is Esporte Clube Bahia. Their matches are called Ba–Vi. This name comes from "Ba" for Bahia and "Vi" for Vitória. It is one of the most intense football rivalries in the world.

Club History

How Vitória Started

The club began on May 13, 1899. It was founded by two brothers, Artur and Artêmio Valente, and seventeen other young friends. They came from an old family in Bahia. The brothers learned about football while studying in England.

At first, Vitória was a cricket club. It was called Club de Cricket Victoria. This was because all the founders lived in the Vitória neighborhood in Salvador.

First Football Match

Vitória played its first football game on May 22, 1901. The match was at Campo da Pólvora against International Sport Club. This opposing team was made up of English sailors. Vitória won the game 3–2.

A couple of months later, Vitória changed its team colors. They switched from black and white to red and black. These are still the club's colors today.

On September 13, 1903, Vitória played its first official match. They beat São Paulo Bahia Football Club 2–0. In 1908, Vitória won its very first title, the Campeonato Baiano. They won this championship again the next year.

Becoming Professional

From 1910 to 1952, Vitória did not win any major titles. This was because they were still an amateur club. In 1953, the club became professional. That year, they won their third Baiano championship.

For many years, Bahia dominated the state championship. Vitória won titles in 1955, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1972, 1980, 1985, and 1989.

Success in the 1990s and 2000s

In 1993, Vitória finished second in the 1993 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. They lost to Palmeiras. This was a big achievement for the club.

Vitória became the top club in Bahia during the 1990s and early 2000s. They won the state championship in 1990, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000. In the 1999 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Vitória made it to the semi-finals. In the 2000s, Vitória won the Campeonato Baiano trophy eight times out of ten years.

Ups and Downs

In 2004, Vitória had a tough season. They were moved down to the Brazilian Second Division. In 2005, they were moved down again to the Third Division. This was the first time in their history they played in the third division.

But Vitória quickly bounced back! In 2006, they finished second in the third division and were promoted. In 2007, they finished fourth in the second division. This meant they were promoted back to the first division. They returned to the top league in just two years.

In February 2018, the rivalry between Vitória and Esporte Clube Bahia made headlines around the world. Nine players were given red cards in a State Championship match.

Team Mascot

Vitória's mascot is a lion named Lelê Leão. The mascot's job is to cheer on the club's fans and players during games.

Team Colors and Kits

Vitória's main colors are red and black. This is why the team is often called "Rubro-Negro," which means "red-black" in Portuguese.

When the club first started, its colors were going to be green and yellow. But it was hard to find materials in those colors. So, they chose white and black instead. These were the colors worn in their very first match. The current red and black colors were adopted three years later, in 1902.

Many different styles of shirts have been worn by Vitória's players over the years.
