Club History and Founding
Cerro Porteño was founded on October 1, 1912. A woman named Susana Núñez and a group of young people wanted to create a new football club. At that time, Paraguay had some political disagreements between two main parties.
To show unity and friendship, the club's founders chose colors from both parties. They picked red (from the Colorado Party) and blue (from the Liberal Party). Later, white was added to the shorts. This made the team's uniform include all the colors of the Paraguayan flag.
The club's name, Cerro Porteño, comes from a famous battle. This battle happened on January 19, 1811, near a place called Cerro Mbaé. In this battle, Paraguayan troops won a great victory against forces from Buenos Aires, Argentina (who were called Porteños). This important historical event gave the club its name.
Over the years, Cerro Porteño has won many national championships. However, they have not yet won any big international tournaments. They have had some good runs in the Copa Libertadores, reaching the semi-finals several times.
In 2014, the club's president, Juan José Zapag, spoke out against corruption in Paraguayan football. He said that his club would only win by playing fair.
