The Symbols on the Flag
The flag of Paraguay is one of the few national flags that has a different design on its front and back.
The Front Side: Coat of Arms
On the front side of the flag, you will see the National Coat of Arms of Paraguay. This symbol is a yellow star surrounded by a green palm branch and an olive branch. These branches are tied together with a blue ribbon. Above the star, you can read the words "REPÚBLICA DEL PARAGUAY" (Republic of Paraguay). The star is called the "May Star." It represents the date of Paraguay's independence, May 14, 1811.
The Back Side: Treasury Seal
The back side of the flag shows the Treasury Seal. This symbol features a lion sitting in front of a pole with a red Phrygian cap on top. The Phrygian cap is a symbol of freedom. History of the Flag
Paraguay officially adopted this flag design on November 25, 1842. However, the colors red, white, and blue were used in earlier flags. These colors were inspired by the French flag. They represent the ideals of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Over the years, the exact design of the coat of arms and the treasury seal changed slightly. The most recent update to the symbols on the flag happened in 2013. This update made sure the symbols looked clear and official.
