What Does Paraguay's Coat of Arms Look Like?
The coat of arms of Paraguay has two main sides, like a coin. These are called the obverse and the reverse.
The Front Side (Obverse)
The front side, or obverse, is usually seen on the national flag. It has a white circle in the middle. Inside this circle, there is a bright yellow five-pointed star. This star is surrounded by two green branches: a palm branch on the left and an olive branch on the right. These branches are tied together at the bottom.
Around the star and branches, you can read the name of the country in Spanish: "REPÚBLICA DEL PARAGUAY". This means "REPUBLIC OF PARAGUAY".
The Back Side (Reverse)
The back side, or reverse, shows a golden lion. The lion is standing in front of a staff, which is like a tall pole. On top of the staff is a red Phrygian cap. This cap is a symbol of freedom.
Below the lion, you can see the national motto: "PAZ Y JUSTICIA". In English, this means "PEACE AND JUSTICE".
Where Can You See It?
You can see the reverse side of the seal on the national flag. It is also used by the Supreme Court of Paraguay, which is the highest court in the country. Both sides of the seal appear on the banknotes of Paraguay's money, called the guaraní.
The first design of this coat of arms was created in 1820. This was during the time when Francia was the leader of Paraguay.
