The official flag of Calgary is a special symbol for the city. It has a red background with white stripes at the top and bottom. In the middle, you'll see a cowboy hat and a big letter "C". This flag was chosen in 1983 after a fun contest. Two people, Gwin Clarke and Yvonne Fritz, designed it. Yvonne Fritz later became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, which is like a local government group.

What Does the Calgary Flag Look Like?

The flag of Calgary has a bright red background. This red color covers most of the flag. At the very top and bottom, there are thin white stripes. These stripes add a nice contrast to the red.

Symbols on the Flag

The most important parts of the flag are in the middle. You will see a white, stylized letter "C". This "C" stands for Calgary. Right next to the "C" is a white cowboy hat. The cowboy hat is a famous symbol of Calgary. It reminds everyone of the city's western heritage and the exciting Calgary Stampede.

How Was the Flag Chosen?

The current flag was adopted on October 3, 1983. It was chosen through a special contest. People submitted their ideas for a new flag design. The winning design came from Gwin Clarke and Yvonne Fritz. Their design was picked because it clearly showed what Calgary is all about.

Calgary's Previous Flag Design

Before 1983, Calgary had a different flag. This older flag was mostly white. It had a red stripe going up and down on the left side. Inside this red stripe, you could see the city's coat of arms. The coat of arms is like a special badge for the city.

Details of the Old Flag

On the white part of the old flag, the word "Calgary" was written. There were also small maple leaves above and below the text. Maple leaves are a national symbol of Canada. This older flag was replaced to give Calgary a fresh, new look that was easier to recognize.
