What the Flag Looks Like
The flag of Edmonton has two main colours: white and light blue. The white part is a large square in the middle. This square is called a "Canadian pale" because it's wider than the sides.
On top of this white square, you can see the coat of arms for the city. A coat of arms is like a special symbol or emblem for a city or family.
The Meaning of the Colours
The colours on Edmonton's flag are not just random. They have special meanings:
- The white colour stands for peace. It shows that Edmonton is a peaceful place.
- The light blue colour represents water. This is because the North Saskatchewan River flows right through the city.
A Bit of Flag History
The first official flag for Edmonton was approved by the City Council on December 12, 1966. It was designed by an artist named Norman Yates.
Later, in 1986, the flag was updated to its current design. This means the city's flag has been around for a long time, representing Edmonton for many years.
Trying for a New Design
In 2016, the mayor at the time, Don Iveson, thought about changing the flag. He supported an idea by an artist named Ryan McCourt. This new design would have changed the city's coat of arms on the flag.
However, many people did not support this new flag idea. Because of this, Mayor Iveson decided not to go ahead with the redesign in 2017. So, Edmonton kept its current flag.
