Flag of Mongolia
The national flag of Mongolia.

The flag of Mongolia is the official symbol of the country Mongolia. It was created in 1992 and represents the nation's history, culture, and hopes for the future. This flag is a very important symbol for all Mongolians.

What the Flag Looks Like

The flag of Mongolia has three vertical stripes. The stripes on the left (hoist-side) and right (fly-side) are bright red. The middle stripe is a beautiful blue. On the red stripe closest to the flagpole, you will see a special symbol called the Soyombo symbol. This symbol is placed right in the middle of that red stripe.

What the Colors and Symbols Mean

Each part of the Mongolian flag has a special meaning. These meanings help tell the story of Mongolia and its people.

Meaning of the Colors

  • Red: The red color on the flag stands for prosperity and happiness. It also reminds people of the country's strength and determination.
  • Blue: The blue stripe represents the sky, which is a very important part of Mongolian culture. It also symbolizes eternity and the vast blue sky over Mongolia.

Meaning of the Soyombo Symbol

The Soyombo symbol is an ancient Mongolian symbol with many parts, each having its own meaning:

  • Fire: At the very top, the three flames of the fire represent prosperity, growth, and renewal.
  • Sun and Moon: Below the fire, there is a sun and a moon. These are very old symbols of the Mongolian people. They show that the Mongolian nation will last forever, just like the sun and moon in the sky.
  • Triangles: The two triangles pointing downwards are like arrows. They mean that Mongolia is ready to defend itself against any enemies.
  • Rectangles: The two horizontal rectangles in the middle represent honesty and justice. They show that everyone in Mongolia, from the top leaders to the ordinary people, should be fair and honest.
  • Yin-Yang Symbol: In the center, there is a circle with two fish-like shapes. This is a traditional symbol of balance and harmony. It shows that men and women work together in peace.
  • Vertical Pillars: The two vertical pillars on the sides of the symbol represent a fortress or a strong wall. They mean that the Mongolian nation is strong and united.

History of the Flag

The current flag of Mongolia was officially adopted on January 12, 1992. Before this, Mongolia had different flags, especially during its time as a socialist state. The 1992 flag brought back the traditional Soyombo symbol without the socialist star that was on earlier versions. This change reflected Mongolia's new path as a democratic country.
