History of the Flag
Senegal's flag was adopted on August 20, 1960. Before this, Senegal was part of the Mali Federation with Mali. The flag of the Mali Federation was very similar, with green, yellow, and red stripes. However, it had a black human figure (called a "kanaga") in the center instead of a green star. When Senegal left the Mali Federation and became fully independent, they changed the black figure to the green star, keeping the same meaningful colors.
