Flambards is a popular book for young people, written by K. M. Peyton. It was first published in 1967. The story, and the series of books that followed, takes place in England around the time of World War I.
The first book, also called Flambards, introduces us to Christina Parsons. She's a teenage orphan who goes to live at a big, old house called Flambards. This house belongs to her uncle, William Russell, and his two sons, Mark and Will.
What is Flambards About?
Christina Parsons has moved around a lot since she became an orphan at age five. In 1901, she is sent to live at Flambards. This is the home of her mother's half-brother, William Russell.
Christina's aunt thinks that Uncle Russell wants Christina to marry his son, Mark. This would help bring money back to Flambards. Mark is very keen on hunting, just like his father.
However, the younger son, William, is scared of horses. He dreams of becoming an aviator, which means flying planes. Christina soon becomes good friends with William. He helps her see things differently, especially about social classes and her love for horses.
William and Christina eventually fall in love. They decide to run away together to London. They hope to get married there.
The Flambards Book Series
Flambards is actually the first book in a series. There are four books in total.
- Flambards (1967)
- The Edge of the Cloud (1969)
- Flambards in Summer (1969)
- Flambards Divided (1981)
For the second book, The Edge of the Cloud, K. M. Peyton won a special award. It was the Carnegie Medal. This award is given to the best children's book by a British writer each year. She was also recognized for the first and third books in the series.
Peyton also won the 1970 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. This award is given by The Guardian newspaper. She won it for the entire Flambards trilogy.
The first three books were made into a 13-part TV show in 1979. It was called Flambards. Christine McKenna played Christina Parsons in the show.
The books were also published in the United States. They kept the original drawings by Victor Ambrus.
