The Fletcher Union Church, also called the Fletcher Community House, is a historic building in Fletcher, Vermont. It was built in 1871. This church is one of the few public buildings in the small town. For more than a century, it has been a place for the community to meet. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is an important historical site.

What the Fletcher Union Church Looks Like

The old Fletcher Union Church stands in a countryside area of Fletcher. You can easily see it on a small hill near Cambridge Road. It is a one-story building made of wood. It sits on a stone base. The building has a pointed roof with edges that stick out a bit. Its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

A square tower sticks out from the middle of the front of the building. The tower has a tall, plain bottom part. Above that is a smaller square section with openings called louvers. This part is a belfry, where a bell would hang. A gently sloped pyramid-shaped roof covers the belfry. The main door is at the bottom of the tower. A window is located right above the door. Inside, there is a small entry area. Stairs lead up to a balcony. The main room has a stage at one end. This stage was added in 1919. The basement of the building has a kitchen, bathrooms, and a space for dining or meetings.

The Story of the Fletcher Union Church

The Fletcher Union Church was built in 1871. A well-known builder named N.R. Bingham constructed it. This church replaced the town's very first church. That first church was built in 1830 across the street. Both the original and this new church were "union churches." This means they were built for different church groups to share.

The last time the building was used for religious services was in 1899. A group called the Universalists used it then. In 1908, the town took over the building. They changed it into a community meeting house. Since then, it has been used for many town events. People have held community meetings and social gatherings there. The local Grange chapter also used it for their meetings.
