History of Flomot

How Flomot Got Its Name

The name "Flomot" is a mix of two county names: Floyd and Motley. This is because the first post office, built in 1902, was right on the line between these two counties. Even before the post office, a school and a store were already in the area.

Early Days and Growth

In 1915, the post office moved to the home of W.R. Welch. By the mid-1930s, Flomot was a busy place. It had two cotton gins, which are machines that separate cotton fibers from their seeds. There were also two grocery stores, several restaurants, and a service station.

Population Changes

Flomot's population reached its highest point in 1940, with about 200 people living there. After that, people and businesses started moving to bigger cities. By 1980, the number of residents had gone down to 181, and it stayed around that number until 2000. The Flomot Post Office officially closed on October 31, 2017.

A Local Sports Hero

Flomot is the hometown of a famous American football player named Thayne "Red" Amonett. He was known as "The Flomot Flash." In 1940, he was recruited by coach Pete Cawthon to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. After serving in World War II, he joined coach Cawthon again to play for the Detroit Lions.

Education

Students in Flomot attend public schools managed by the Motley County Independent School District.
