Quitaque (pronounced KIT-ih-kway) is a small city in southeastern Briscoe County, Texas, United States. It is located in West Texas, known for its ranches and farms. The city is just south of Caprock Canyons State Park, a popular natural area.
In 2020, about 342 people lived in Quitaque. The city's name comes from an American Indian language. It means "end of the trail."

Exploring Quitaque's Location
Quitaque is found along Texas State Highway 86. To the west is Silverton, and to the east is Turkey.
The entrance to Caprock Canyons State Park is about three miles north of Quitaque. This park is famous for its beautiful canyons and trails. The Caprock Canyons Trailway is also very close, just south of the city. Two creeks, Kent Creek and Quitaque Creek, flow near the town.

Culture and Local Events
In 2015, Governor Greg Abbott officially named Quitaque the Bison Capital of Texas. This is because of the bison herd living in Caprock Canyons State Park.
Every year, the city holds a special event called BisonFest. This festival helps raise money to support the bison herd at the park.

Students in Quitaque attend schools within the Turkey-Quitaque Independent School District. This district serves the children from both Turkey and Quitaque.
Famous People from Quitaque
A well-known Texas high-school and college football coach, Gene Mayfield, was born in Quitaque in 1928.
