Flora is a small, quiet community in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States. It's about 35 miles north of a town called Enterprise. Flora is located near Oregon Route 3. It's often called a ghost town because not many people live there anymore. The area is quite high up, at 4,350 feet above sea level. There are also 6 old mines in the community.
History of Flora
Flora was officially planned and marked out on a map on April 7, 1897. By 1910, it had grown to about 200 people. It even had a large school with eight rooms. People consider Flora to be "the most important town to have failed" in that part of Oregon.
The community got its name from Flora Buzzard. She was the daughter of A. D. Buzzard, who was the first postmaster there. The Flora post office served the area from 1890 until 1966. The Flora School building was constructed in 1915. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, this historic school is known as the Flora School Education Center. It has been fixed up and now teaches about pioneer arts and crafts.
