Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Flora was once a small community in Meigs County, Ohio. Today, it is known as an extinct town, meaning it no longer exists as a living community. The U.S. government's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) still lists it as a place that was once populated.

History of Flora

The community of Flora began to grow in the late 1800s. A post office was opened there in 1884. This post office helped connect the small town to the rest of the country.

The name "Flora" has a sweet story behind it. An early settler in the area named the community after his daughter, Flora. This shows how personal and connected early settlements often were.

The post office served the people of Flora for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1949. After this, the community slowly faded away, becoming what we now call an extinct town.
