Exploring Flora Dale
Flora Dale is a quiet place with a few houses. These homes are mostly found along Pennsylvania Route 34. This road is the main route through the area. The community is just north of Quaker Valley Road.
A Look at Flora Dale's Past
The name of the community has changed a few times over the years. It was officially called Flora Dale from 1861 to 1911. Then, for a short time, from 1911 to 1926, it was known as Floradale. After that, it went back to being Flora Dale until 1957. Even though the official name changed, old newspapers often used both spellings.
The Post Office Story
The Flora Dale Post Office first opened in 1861. The first postmaster was Elijah Wright, and his wife, Mary A. Wright, also helped. They worked there until 1885. After them, three more people served as postmasters: Amos G. Cook, Maria K. Cook, and Mary A. Hartman. They worked until 1919. The last two postmasters were sisters, Anna and Alice Black. They ran the post office until it closed in 1957.
When the post office closed, the sign with the community's name was taken down. Because of this, there is no longer a sign to tell people they are in Flora Dale. However, you can still find Flora Dale marked on most maps today.
The Quaker Meeting House
Just outside the main part of Flora Dale, you'll find the Menallen Township Society of Friends Meeting House. The Society of Friends is also known as the Quakers. They are a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs. This building is where they meet for worship.
The Meeting House Building
The current Meeting House is made of brick and was built in 1880. It replaced an older building that was built around 1838. The Meeting House is surrounded by very large white oak trees. The trunks of these trees are more than 2 feet (0.6 meters) thick! Behind the Meeting House, there is a covered stable. This stable was a place where people could tie up their horses. There is also a cemetery located just south of the Meeting House.
