Florencio Harmodio Arosemena Guillén (born September 17, 1872, in Panama City – died August 30, 1945, in Manhattan) was an important leader in Panama. He served as the 6th President of Panama from October 1, 1928, to January 3, 1931. He was a member of the Liberal Party, a political group in Panama.

About Florencio Arosemena

Florencio Arosemena was born in Panama City on September 17, 1872. At that time, Panama City was part of Colombia. His parents were Florencio Arosemena De Alba and Clara Guillén.

Early Life and Education

When he was just 11 years old, Florencio was sent to study in Germany. His father believed he was very intelligent and wanted him to have the best education. Florencio became a skilled civil engineer. He graduated from the University of Heidelberg in Germany in 1895.

A Man of Many Talents

Florencio Arosemena was very good with languages. He could speak seven different ones! These included Spanish, English, German, Turkish, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

He was also a lifelong friend of the famous physicist Albert Einstein. They had met and studied together at university in Germany. Their friendship lasted for their entire lives.

Engineering Achievements

After finishing his studies, Florencio Arosemena worked on many important projects. He helped the German government build railroads in countries like Portugal and Turkey. Later, Cuba hired him to help build its Central Railroad.

In 1895, he helped design and build a very difficult railroad line. This line went from Guayaquil to Quito in Ecuador. It was known as "the nose of the devil" because it was so challenging to build. This happened when Eloy Alfaro was president of Ecuador.

Florencio Arosemena also contributed to many important buildings and projects in Panama. Some of his notable works include:

  • The Palace of Government
  • The National Institute
  • The National Theater
  • The Panama City Hall
  • The Puerto Argüelles Railroad
  • The plans for the Exposition Neighborhood, which includes monuments like the National Institute Gorgas.

Time as President

As a member of the Liberal Party, Florencio Arosemena was elected President of Panama. He became president on October 1, 1928. This was a time when Panama faced serious economic challenges.

During his presidency, he focused on public works projects. He also tried to reduce government spending. In 1928, he tried to lower government salaries. However, salaries were restored the next year. This led to a budget deficit in 1930.

His time as president ended on January 3, 1931. Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid led a movement that resulted in his presidency coming to an end. Florencio Arosemena passed away on August 30, 1945.
