Flowers, North Carolina facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Flowers is a small, unincorporated community located in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. It's situated west of Jordan, east of Clayton, and southeast of Archer Lodge. The area is about 289 feet (88 meters) above sea level.

This community is named after Percy Flowers, a well-known landowner who owned a lot of property in the area. Before the Flowers family, this land was part of a large farm called Pineville plantation. This plantation was owned by Josiah Ogden Watson, a doctor who served in the War of 1812. After Dr. Watson passed away, the ownership of the plantation and the people who lived and worked there passed to his nephew, J. W. B. Watson. He was a state senator who played a role in important state decisions during a time of big changes in the country.

The Heart of Flowers

The exact boundaries of the Flowers community are not clearly set. However, the intersection of Buffalo Road and North Carolina Highway 42 is generally seen as the center. This spot is often called "Flowers Crossroads."

Local Landmarks

One of the main landmarks in the center of the community is the Flowers General Store. It's a historic spot where people can gather.

Just north of Flowers Crossroads, there's a small cemetery. This cemetery is the burial place for some of the early landowners and other people who lived on the old plantation.

Modern Growth

Today, a large housing development called Flowers Plantation is a big part of the community. This development has been recognized for its quality, being voted "NC Community of the Year" in both 2013 and 2014 by the North Carolina Home Builders Association.
