The Story of Fluke
The movie begins with a puppy named Fluke. He is a mutt, but looks like a Golden Retriever. Fluke starts having strange memories and dreams. They seem to be about a human life he once lived.
After escaping from an animal shelter, Fluke meets an old homeless woman named Bella. She names him Fluke, saying he is a "fluke by nature." Fluke helps Bella earn money. He is very good at a game called the shell game. People are amazed by his skills.
Sadly, Bella gets sick and passes away. Fluke then meets a smart street dog named Rumbo. Rumbo takes Fluke to a kind man named Bert who gives them food. As Fluke grows into an adult dog, he realizes something big. He was once a man named Thomas P. Johnson. Thomas died in a car crash.
Fluke's Escape and New Friend
Later, a man named Sylvester captures Fluke. He wants to use Fluke for experiments at a company. Rumbo bravely comes to rescue Fluke. During their escape, Rumbo gets hurt by Sylvester. As Rumbo is dying, he tells Fluke a secret. Rumbo was once a human too. He was Bert's brother. Rumbo wishes to smell the sea again, hinting he was a sailor.
After Rumbo's death, Fluke searches for his old family. He finds his wife, Carol, and his son, Brian. Fluke becomes their new family dog. Carol is not very fond of dogs at first. But she sees how much Brian loves Fluke and agrees to keep him.
As a dog, Fluke learns more about his family. He realizes he was a very busy person. He spent too much time working and not enough time with them. This makes him feel sad and regretful.
Discovering the Past
More memories come back to Fluke. He starts to think his old business partner, Jeff Newman, caused his human death. Jeff is now dating Carol, which makes Fluke angry. When Jeff visits the house, Fluke attacks him fiercely. Because of this, Fluke is put outside. Jeff calls animal control, and Fluke has to run away.
The next night, Brian goes missing while looking for Fluke. Carol asks Jeff to help find him. Fluke had hidden in Jeff's car. He almost causes Jeff to have a car accident, just like his own. Then, Fluke has another memory. He realizes Jeff was not to blame for his death. Fluke himself caused his own accident. He was driving carelessly to argue with Jeff and swerved to avoid a truck. Jeff had tried to save him but couldn't.
Jeff, who is hurt, seems to understand who Fluke really is. He tells Fluke to find Brian. Fluke barks for a passing driver to help Jeff. Then, he runs off to find Brian.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
Fluke goes to the graveyard where Thomas was buried. He finds Brian there, who is locked inside. Fluke stays close to Brian to keep him warm in the snow. Carol also figures out where Brian might be. She uses her car to break open the cemetery gates and picks up Brian.
Brian tells Carol that Fluke spoke to him in a vision. Fluke said he had to leave them. Carol tries to get Fluke to come home. But Fluke digs in the snow in front of his tombstone. He uncovers the word "forever," a special phrase he used to say to Carol as a human. Carol is shocked and lets Fluke leave.
With a heavy heart, Fluke leaves his family. He trusts Jeff to take care of them. Fluke understands he can no longer be the human family man he should have been. He decides to cherish his life as a dog.
Far away, Fluke is resting under a tree. To his surprise, he is reunited with Rumbo! Rumbo has been reincarnated as a squirrel. Rumbo tells Fluke about his new life and about how reincarnation works.
