Flying Saucer Working Party facts for kids
The Flying Saucer Working Party (or FSWP) was the first official group in the United Kingdom to seriously study UFOs. It was set up by the UK Ministry of Defence. This group started because a smart scientist named Sir Henry Tizard believed that UFO sightings should not be ignored. He thought they needed a proper scientific look.
What Was the Flying Saucer Working Party?
The Flying Saucer Working Party was created in October 1950. Sir Henry Tizard, who was a top science advisor for the Ministry of Defence, insisted on it. He felt it was important to study UFO reports carefully. So, he approved a small team to investigate these mysterious sightings.
What Did They Find?
The group finished their study and published their final report in June 1951. This report was later shared with UFO researchers in 2001. After looking at many reports, the Working Party decided that all the UFO sightings they studied could be explained.
They found that most sightings were due to things like:
- Natural events in the sky, such as stars, planets, or weather.
- People mistaking regular things like airplanes, balloons, or birds for UFOs.
- Optical illusions or tricks of the mind.
- People deliberately making up hoaxes.
The report strongly suggested that no more investigations into mysterious things in the sky should happen. They said this unless new, real evidence appeared.
