The Fokker F28 Fellowship was a short-range jet airliner built by a Dutch company called Fokker. It was designed to carry passengers on shorter flights. This type of airplane is known as a regional jet, which means it's used for flights between cities that are not too far apart.

About the Fokker F28 Fellowship

The Fokker F28 Fellowship made its very first flight on May 9, 1967. It started carrying passengers for airlines on March 28, 1969, with an airline called Braathens SAFE. Over the years, 241 of these planes were built. Production of the F28 lasted from 1967 to 1987. Today, only a few of these aircraft are still in service.

Different Versions of the F28

The Fokker F28 Fellowship came in several different versions, or "Marks," which had slight changes.

  • The Mk 1000 was the original, shorter version.
  • The Mk 2000 had a longer body, about 87 inches (2.2 meters) longer than the Mk 1000. This allowed it to carry more passengers.
  • The Mk 3000 kept the shorter body of the Mk 1000 but had wider wings, like the Mk 4000.
  • The Mk 4000 had the longer body of the Mk 2000 and also featured wider wings. It also had extra emergency exits over the wings.

Who Used the F28?

Many airlines around the world used the Fokker F28 Fellowship for their regional flights. Some of the main users historically included Garuda Indonesia and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Today, companies like AirQuarius Aviation and Gatari Air Service still use them, though in very limited numbers. The F28 was also used by some air forces, like the Argentine Naval Aviation and the Indonesian Air Force.

What Came After the F28?

The design of the Fokker F28 Fellowship was used to create newer and larger airplanes. These included the Fokker 70 and the Fokker 100. These newer planes were also popular regional jets, building on the success of the F28.
