The Font de Canaletes (which means Canaletes Fountain) is a famous fountain in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It stands tall on La Rambla, a well-known street, close to Plaça de Catalunya. This beautiful fountain has a lamp post on top, making it easy to spot.

This fountain is a special meeting point for football fans. Since the 1930s, supporters of the Barça football team gather here to celebrate after their team wins a match.

There's a fun tradition about the Font de Canaletes. People say that if you drink water from this fountain, you will surely come back to Barcelona one day. This belief is even written on the ground nearby! The fountain gets its name from an old city wall built in the 1300s. This wall was called Canaletes because it had water pipes that supplied water to Barcelona's old city.

History of the Canaletes Fountain

The very first fountain in this spot was built in the 1700s. Its water came from a large tank in the Torre de Sant Sever, a tower that was part of the old medieval city walls. This water system provided water to areas like Las Ramblas and Raval. The tank itself was already known as Canaletes. This might be because many small channels (or canals) branched off from it to supply water to different fountains nearby.

In the 1800s, the old city walls were taken down. When the Torre de Sant Sever was demolished in 1862, the original fountain disappeared too. For a while, two temporary iron fountains were put in its place.

In 1888, the City Council of Barcelona decided to build a permanent, new fountain. This was part of a bigger plan to install four fountain-lampposts across the city. Pere Falqués was the designer chosen for this project. Later, the plan grew to include fourteen fountains, and Jaume Rodelles was also brought in to help. The Font de Canaletes you see today was finally built in 1892.
