The Food Bank Singapore Ltd. is a special group that started in 2012. It is a registered charity in Singapore. This means it's officially recognized for helping people.

It works like a "food bank." They collect extra food that businesses and people don't need. Then, they give this food to places that help others. These places include homes for older people, family support centers, and soup kitchens (where free meals are given).

Since 2019, they even have special vending machines called Food Pantry 2.0. These machines are open all day, every day. People with a special food card can get food from them. The Food Bank Singapore is also part of a bigger group called the Global Foodbanking Network. This network connects food banks around the world.

Why Food Banks Are Needed

Food Waste in Singapore

Every year, a lot of food is wasted in Singapore. The National Environment Agency shares facts about this. They show that about 788,600 tonnes of food are thrown away each year.

This is a huge amount! Only a small part of this wasted food, about 13%, gets recycled. This is much lower than the overall recycling rate for other things, which is about 60%. Food banks help to reduce this waste by giving good food a second chance.

How The Food Bank Singapore Helps

Collecting Food Donations

The Food Bank Singapore collects different kinds of food. They get non-perishable items (food that doesn't spoil quickly, like canned goods) from food companies. They also get food from special "Food Drives" where people donate.

You can also find their "Bank Boxes" all over Singapore. These are places where people can drop off food donations.

Rescuing Perishable Food

They also rescue food that spoils faster, like fresh fruits and vegetables. They get these from places like the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre. Cakes and pastries from restaurants and bakeries are also collected.

Even cooked food from hotels is saved through their "Food Rescue Project." This way, good food doesn't go to waste. Instead, it helps people who need it.
