Foodland's Beginning and Growth
Foodland opened its very first store in Honolulu in 1948. The person who started it was Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan. He came from Ireland to Hawaii and created this new supermarket.
Over the years, Foodland grew bigger. It opened stores on other Hawaiian islands. In 1967, it expanded to Kauai. Then, in 1970, Foodland stores opened on Maui. By 1971, you could find Foodland on the Big Island of Hawaii too.
Today, Foodland is the largest supermarket chain in Hawaii that is owned by people from Hawaii. It is also the oldest one.
Who Leads Foodland Now?
Foodland competes with other large grocery stores. These include local chains like Times Supermarkets. It also competes with big national stores such as Safeway, Costco, Don Quijote, and Walmart.
Since 1998, Maurice Sullivan's daughter, Jenai S. Wall, has been in charge. She is the current chairman and CEO of Foodland Super Market.
The Maika'i Program
In 1995, Foodland started a special program for its shoppers. It's called the Maika'i program. This program lets customers earn rewards when they shop often at Foodland stores.
