Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Forbes is a small, quiet place in southeastern Holt County, Missouri, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Forbes is located about five miles (or eight kilometers) southeast of a town called Oregon.

History of Forbes

The community of Forbes was first planned and settled in 1869. It was named after a very important person at the time: John Murray Forbes. He was a famous businessman known as a railroad magnate. This means he was a powerful leader in the railroad industry, helping to build and manage many train lines across the country.

A post office was opened in Forbes in 1903. Post offices were very important back then because they were the main way people sent and received letters and packages. The Forbes post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1975.
