The National Bank of New Zealand Building is a special old building. It stands at the corner of Cuba Street and Vivian Street in Wellington, New Zealand. Today, a popular restaurant called Logan Brown is located inside.

A Look at the Building

This building was designed by an architect named Claude Plummer-Jones. It was built between 1917 and 1923. The building has a very grand main room that used to be the banking hall.

Building Materials and Style

The building is made of strong concrete. The outside is covered with two types of stone. The bottom part has Malmesbury stone, which gives it a rough, old-fashioned look. The upper parts are covered with smooth sandstone.

The building's design is in the Classical style. This means it looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings.

Outside Features

The two upper floors have tall, fancy columns called Corinthian columns. These columns go up through both floors. Above them, there's a decorative band called an entablature. On top of that, there's a railing-like structure called a balustraded parapet.

Inside the Building

The main floor used to be the bank's main hall. It's shaped like an octagon, which means it has eight sides. Inside, you'll see more Corinthian columns, just like the ones outside. These columns are in pairs, and arches connect them.

Above the main hall, there's a large glass dome. It's about 6 metres wide! This dome lets in lots of light and makes the space feel very open and grand. Many people think this banking hall is one of the most beautiful indoor spaces in Wellington.

Protecting History

The National Bank of New Zealand Building is very important. Heritage New Zealand has given it a "Category 1" rating. This means it's a building of special historical or cultural importance that needs to be protected.
