Forsyth Island is a special place in New Zealand. It is located in the outer part of the Marlborough Sounds, which is a beautiful area of bays and islands on the South Island. A narrow stretch of water, about 300 meters (984 feet) wide, separates the island from the mainland. This water is called Allen Strait, or sometimes Guards Pass.

In 2012, Forsyth Island was one of the biggest islands in the South Pacific that was completely owned by private people. It offers special places to stay, and you can reach it by helicopter or boat.

About Forsyth Island

Location and Landscape

Forsyth Island is found in the outer Marlborough Sounds. This area is known for its many bays, inlets, and small islands. The island itself has a mix of farmland and natural forests, called native bush.

It has hills that rise higher than 350 meters (about 1,150 feet). From these hills, you can see amazing views of the Marlborough Sounds. You can also look east towards the North Island of New Zealand in the distance.

Island Life

Even though it is a private island, Forsyth Island is connected to the outside world. It gets electricity and phone service through a cable that runs across Allen Strait. A special mail boat delivers mail and supplies to the island every week from Havelock.
