Fourmile Lake is a natural lake located in the state of South Dakota, in the United States. It is found within Marshall County, South Dakota. This lake is a part of the many beautiful natural areas in the region.

What's in a Name?

Fourmile Lake got its name in a very straightforward way. It was named because of its distance from an important historical place. The lake is located about four miles (6.4 km) away from Fort Sisseton. This fort was a frontier military post built in 1864. So, the name "Fourmile" simply tells us how far the lake is from that historic fort.
