The main town, or "county seat," is Britton. Marshall County was started on May 2, 1885. It was named after Marshall Vincent, who was one of the first settlers in the area.

Geography of Marshall County
Marshall County is in the northern part of South Dakota. Its northern border touches the state of North Dakota. The land here has gentle, rolling hills. You can also find many lakes and ponds, especially in the southeast. The land generally slopes towards the northeast. The highest point in the county is about 2,034 feet (620 meters) above sea level.
Marshall County covers a total area of 886 square miles (2,295 square kilometers). Most of this area, 838 square miles (2,170 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 48 square miles (124 square kilometers) is water, like lakes and rivers. This means about 5.4% of the county is water. Two rivers, Crow Creek and the Wild Rice River, flow through the county. Part of the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation is also in the eastern part of Marshall County.
