Hillhead, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hillhead is a small, quiet place in Marshall County, South Dakota, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a settlement without its own local government. Think of it like a neighborhood that's part of a larger county, rather than its own town with a mayor and town council. Hillhead is located about 2 kilometers (a little over a mile) northeast of Abraham Lake.

How Hillhead Got Its Name

The area we now call Hillhead has had a few different names over the years! Back in 1916, when a post office was first opened there, it was called Airmount.

However, that name didn't last long. People found it sounded too much like another place called Fairmount, which is in North Dakota. To avoid confusion, the name was quickly changed to Hilltop.

Then, in 1917, the name was changed one more time to Hillhead, which is what it's still called today. The post office that served the community eventually closed its doors in 1960.
