The Fox Tower is a tall office building in downtown Portland, Oregon. It has 27 floors and stands about 113 meters (372 feet) high. The building is located on Broadway, between Yamhill and Morrison streets. It was finished in the year 2000 and cost $64 million to build. The tower got its name from the old Fox Theatre that used to be on the same spot. That theater was there from 1911 until the late 1990s. TVA Architects designed the building, and Tom Moyer developed the property.
Building History
When the Fox Tower was first planned, it was going to have seven floors of parking above the ground. But in 1998, these plans changed. The parking levels were removed to make room for a movie theater. This theater was originally going to be run by Act III Theaters.
In 2012, the building received a special award called Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. This award is given by the U.S. Green Building Council. It means the building was designed and built in a way that is good for the environment and saves energy.
Cool Features of the Fox Tower
The Fox Tower has a very interesting design. One side of the building is curved, while the other side is box-shaped. This mix of shapes makes the building look different from every angle. This unique design also helps to prevent the building's shadow from falling too much on Pioneer Courthouse Square, which is a popular public space nearby.
On the ground floor of the Fox Tower, you can find different shops. There is also a Regal Fox Tower 10 movie theater on the second floor. The building has a large underground parking garage with 462 spaces. When it was built, this garage was the deepest in Portland.
In 2006, the developer, Tom Moyer, started building another underground garage next to the Fox Tower. This new garage opened in December 2007. It connected to the Fox Tower garage, bringing the total parking spaces to 1132. The new garage is even deeper because it's built on a slightly higher piece of land. A city park was built on top of this new underground garage. The underground parking is also planned to connect to the Park Avenue West Tower in the future.
