Near Foxholes Farm

Foxholes is a neighborhood located in the eastern part of Hertford, a town in Hertfordshire, England. This modern area was built on what used to be an old gravel pit called Foxholes Quarry. North of the main neighborhood, you'll find the historic Foxholes Farm. This farm has a shop and a café. It has also been a hub for archaeologists studying the local history.

What's the History of Foxholes?

Archaeologists have found many interesting things in Foxholes. These discoveries show that people lived here a very long time ago. They found signs of people living in the area during the late Romano-British period. This means people were here when the Romans were in Britain.

Scientists found that Roman life in Foxholes happened in three main stages:

  • First Stage (1st–2nd centuries): People dug ditches in the area.
  • Second Stage (2nd–4th centuries): A farmstead was built. This farm had a cemetery (a burial ground) and special ovens for drying corn.
  • Third Stage (4th century): People started making pottery in Foxholes.

There is also proof that buildings were constructed in Foxholes during the early and middle Saxon period. This was from the 6th to 8th centuries. Archaeologists found "sunken-floored buildings" from this time. These were buildings where the floor was dug a little bit into the ground.
