The Russian House

This episode first aired on April 11, 2010. It is set in June 1945. About 7.08 million people watched it.

The story begins just before the 1945 General Election. Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle wants to retire. But his bosses need him to stay. They cannot find anyone to replace him.

Foyle's old boss asks for his help. They need to find an escaped Russian prisoner of war. This man, Ivan Spiakov, fought with the Germans. Spiakov tries to find safety in London. He goes to a place called "The Russian House."

Meanwhile, Milner is now a Detective Inspector in Brighton. He investigates the death of a famous artist. This artist was Stewart's new employer. Foyle's search for the Russians leads him to the same area.

Foyle learns about people being sent back to the Soviet Union. This was often against their will. If this information got out, it could cause problems for the British government.

Foyle is still trying to retire from his police job. He gives his superiors four more weeks. His old army commander asks for his help. They are looking for a Russian prisoner of war. This POW was on the German side.

The two cases soon connect. Jack Stanford, a friend of James, is involved. He murders Littleton. She was James's childhood friend. She also received secret letters from him. Foyle discovers that James's father murdered his mother. Their young son, nicknamed "Jack," saw it happen from a bird hide.

After leaving his job, Foyle plans to go to the US. He wants to "tie up some loose ends." This means he still wants to bring a man named Howard Paige to justice. We also learn that Caroline Devereaux was a nurse. She helped Foyle recover from injuries in World War I.

This episode is the last time we see Anthony Howell as Milner. Stewart and Wainwright's friendship grows. They even get engaged at Hill House.

The episode starts by showing the firebombing of Dresden. This was a bombing in February 1945. It ends by showing the Queen Mary ship. This ship brought US soldiers home.

The episode also mentions MI9. This group helped European Resistance fighters. The Devereaux family estate is called Whitefriars in the show. This place is made up for the story. There was a three-year break before the next series of Foyle's War aired in 2013.
