The Magical Sword Fragarach
How Fragarach Was Made and Its Powers
This special sword was made by the gods themselves! It was said that only certain kings could use it. These kings had to stand on the Stone of Destiny, which was a magical stone that would roar. When the stone roared, the sword would "whisper" back!
Fragarach had many incredible powers:
- If Fragarach was held to someone's throat, they couldn't move or tell a lie. This is why it was called "The Answerer."
- The sword could let its user control the wind.
- It could cut through any shield or wall, no matter how strong.
- It caused wounds that no one could heal from.
Fragarach and King Nuada
Nuada was the first high king of Ireland. He was a very important leader. During a big conflict called the Second Battle of Mag Tuired, Nuada needed a strong leader for his army. He chose a hero named Lugh to lead the fight.
Lugh was a powerful warrior. He used his spear and a special sling given to him by Mannanan Mac Lyr. With these weapons, Lugh defeated the Fomorians, who were a group of mythical enemies, and their king, Balor.
During this important battle, King Nuada gave his sword, Fragarach, to Lugh. This was a symbol that Lugh was now leading the army. Old stories don't clearly say if Lugh actually used the sword in the battle.
