About His Life and Art
Early Years and Learning
François-Auguste Ravier grew up in Lyon, a city in France. His parents wanted him to become a lawyer, so he went to Paris to study law. But Ravier was also very interested in art. From 1833 to 1839, while studying law, he also took art classes at the famous École des Beaux-Arts. There, he learned from a teacher named Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny.
In 1835, Ravier visited a place called Royat. There, he met another important painter, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Corot became a big influence on Ravier's early painting style.
Time in Italy and Return to France
From 1840 to 1845, Corot encouraged Ravier to work in Italy. While there, Ravier spent time with other French artists. He mostly explored the countryside, painting the beautiful landscapes. Even though he painted a lot, he didn't show his artworks in Italy.
After returning to France, Ravier settled in a town called Crémieu. He lived there until 1868. Then, he moved to Morestel. He was drawn to Morestel because of its special light and amazing, quiet landscapes.
The "École de Morestel"
Many young painters were interested in Ravier's new ways of mixing colors. They came to Morestel to ask for his advice. Later, these artists were grouped together and called the "École de Morestel" (School of Morestel). François Guiguet, whom Ravier met in 1876, is one of the most well-known artists from this group.
Later Life and Legacy
In his last ten years, Ravier's eyesight got worse. People said he had "looked at the sun too much" because he painted so many bright landscapes. He passed away in Morestel in 1895.
Besides Corot, Ravier greatly admired the English painter, J. M. W. Turner. Because of his creative ways of using colors, some people think he was an early Impressionist artist. Impressionism is a style of painting that tries to capture the feeling of a moment, especially light and color.
