Frances Sheridan (born Frances Chamberlaine; 1724 – 26 September 1766) was an Irish writer. She wrote many popular novels and plays.

About Frances Sheridan's Life

Frances Chamberlaine was born in Dublin, Ireland, around 1724. Her father, Dr. Phillip Chamberlaine, was a minister.

In 1747, Frances married Thomas Sheridan. He was an actor and also managed a theatre. Around this time, Frances started writing her first novel, Eugenia and Adelaide.

Moving to London and Writing Success

The Sheridans moved to London permanently in 1758. There, Frances met Samuel Richardson, a famous writer. He encouraged her to continue writing.

Her most successful novel was Memoirs of Miss Sidney Bidulph (1761). This book was written like a diary. It was inspired by Samuel Richardson's novel, Pamela.

After writing novels, Frances started writing plays. Two of her plays were performed in London. They were shown at the Drury Lane theatre in the 1760s. David Garrick's theatre company put on these shows.

Frances Sheridan's Family

Frances Sheridan had several children. Her son, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, became a very famous playwright. His early plays were greatly influenced by his mother's work.

Her daughter, Alicia Sheridan Lefanu (1753–1817), also became a writer. Alicia wrote a play called Sons of Erin, which was performed in London in 1812. Another daughter, Anne Elizabeth Sheridan Lefanu (1756–1837), also wrote. Some of her journals were published later.

Frances Sheridan passed away in Blois, France, when she was 42 years old. Some of her works were published after her death. These included her story The History of Nourjahad and a follow-up to The Memoirs of Miss Sidney Bidulph.

In 1824, Frances Sheridan's granddaughter, Alicia LeFanu, wrote a book about her life. It was called Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Mrs. Frances Sheridan.
