Frances Ward, 6th Baroness Dudley (1611-1697) was an important noblewoman in English history. She became the Baroness of Dudley in 1643 after her grandfather, Edward Sutton, 5th Baron Dudley, passed away. In 1628, she married Humble Ward, whose father was a successful goldsmith in London. Humble Ward later received his own title, Baron Ward of Birmingham. Their family kept both titles for many years. Frances lived until 1697.

Early Life and Family

Frances Sutton was born on July 23, 1611, at Dudley Castle. Her father was Sir Ferdinando Sutton, who was next in line to become the Baron of Dudley. Her mother was Honora Seymour. Frances was baptized at Dudley Castle on August 18, 1611.

When her father died in 1621, Frances became the person who would inherit the barony. At that time, her grandfather, Edward Sutton, was the 5th Baron Dudley. He faced many money problems during his time as baron.

Marriage and Children

In 1628, Frances married Humble Ward. His father, William Ward, was a very rich goldsmith from London. He was also one of her grandfather's creditors, meaning her grandfather owed him money.

Frances and Humble Ward had seven children together. They had three daughters named Honor, Frances, and Theodosia. They also had four sons named Edward, John, Humble, and William.

Becoming a Baroness

On June 24, 1635, Frances was officially recognized as a baron's daughter. This was an important step in her noble status.

She inherited the title of Baroness of Dudley on June 23, 1643. This happened after her grandfather passed away. Her husband, Humble Ward, was given the title of Baron Ward of Birmingham by King Charles I.

Their children and future generations held both the title of Baron Dudley and Baron Ward. This continued until the mid-1700s. Humble Ward died on October 14, 1670. Frances passed away in 1697 and was buried in Himley on August 11, 1697. Her son, Edward, became the next Baron of Dudley.
