Artistic Journey
Early Life and Education
Francesc Abad was born in the city of Terrassa, Spain. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts there and later went to Paris to study. In 1972, he moved to New York City.
When he first started as an artist, Abad was a painter. His early paintings were known for their simple shapes and for using only a few colors. Over time, he became more interested in conceptual art.
Focus on Ideas and Memory
In his later career, Abad began using many types of media, like video and photography, to create his art. One of his most famous projects is called El Camp de la Bota. This work is about a real place in Barcelona with a sad history.
Between 1939 and 1952, under the government of Francisco Franco, at least 1,704 people were executed on the beach at Camp de la Bota. Years later, the area was redeveloped for a big event in 2004. Abad was worried that this important history would be forgotten.
To prevent this, he created an art exhibition. He gathered documents, photos, and stories from the families and friends of the victims. His project helped people remember what happened there. The exhibition was shown in many cities. In 2007, Abad donated the entire project to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) so it would be preserved forever.
