Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Francesc Morera i Cots (born in Sant Mateu, Spain, on April 4, 1731 – died in Valencia, Spain, on October 17, 1793) was a talented composer from the Valencian Community. He wrote music in the Baroque style, which was popular a long time ago.

Francesc started his musical journey early. When he was just 10 years old, he became a choirboy at the Valencia Cathedral. This means he sang in the church choir. His first professional job was as an organist (someone who plays the organ) at the Patriarca's Chapel in Valencia in 1753. He officially got this job in 1755.

Francesc said he learned a lot from another famous musician named Josep Prades i Gallent. When Prades died, Francesc tried to get his job as the Chapel Master (the main music director) at the Valencia Cathedral. He didn't get it right away. Instead, he worked in other cities like Castelló and Cuenca. Finally, in 1768, he achieved his goal and became the Chapel Master at the Valencia Cathedral.

His Music

Francesc Morera i Cots wrote many beautiful musical pieces. Here are a few examples:

  • A la promisión sagrada: This is a type of song called a Villancico, written for the Santísimo (a religious theme).
  • Ah de la corte divina: This is a "Cuatro al Santísimo," another type of religious song.
  • El misterio de la Fe: Another "Cuatro al Santísimo" piece.
  • Como el Rey Supremo anhela: This is a special Villancico-cantata. It was written for 8 voices and included instruments like violins, oboes, horns, and organ.
