Early Life and Education
Francesc de Carreras was born in 1943 in Barcelona, Spain. His father, Narcís de Carreras, was an important person who worked for Francesc Cambó. Later, his father became the president of the famous football club FC Barcelona from 1968 to 1969. He also led a large bank called La Caixa.
In 1967, Francesc de Carreras joined a secret political group called the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC). This party was not allowed to operate openly at that time.
Political Involvement
In 1986, Francesc de Carreras decided to leave the PSUC. He felt that the party was starting to focus too much on nationalist ideas, which he disagreed with.
He became an important member of a group called Foro Babel. This group was created to speak out against the rules about language set by the government in Catalonia, led by Jordi Pujol.
In 2005, he helped write a special statement called "For a new political party in Catalonia." This statement helped create the political party known as Citizens–Party of the Citizenry (Cs). Many people consider Carreras to be one of the main thinkers behind this party.
Academic Career
Francesc de Carreras was a full professor of Constitutional Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Constitutional Law is about the basic laws that govern a country. He retired from his teaching role in September 2013.
In January 2015, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. This is a very respected group of experts. He officially joined in November 2016. He gave a speech about "Essays about Federalism," which is a way of organizing government.
Later Political Views
Carreras later became critical of the Citizens party, especially its leader, Albert Rivera. Rivera used to be his student. In 2019, Carreras warned that Rivera might be putting the party's interests before the interests of Spain.
In July 2019, Carreras announced that he was leaving the Citizens party. He was one of the people who helped start the party. He left because he disagreed with the party's decisions to oppose the PSOE party and to work with far-right groups.
