Early Life and Education
Francesc de Carreras was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1943. His father, Narcís de Carreras, was an important person who worked for Francesc Cambó. His father also became the president of the famous football club FC Barcelona from 1968 to 1969, and later led a big bank called La Caixa.
In 1967, Francesc de Carreras joined a secret political group called the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC). This was during a time when Spain was not a democracy.
Political Involvement
Francesc de Carreras left the PSUC in 1986. He was concerned that the party was focusing too much on Catalan nationalism, which is the idea that Catalonia should be a separate nation.
He became an important member of a group called Foro Babel. This group was created to speak out against the language rules that the Catalan government, led by Jordi Pujol, was putting in place.
In 2005, he helped create a new political party called Citizens–Party of the Citizenry (Cs). Many people saw him as one of the main thinkers behind this party.
Career in Law and Academia
Francesc de Carreras was a professor of Constitutional Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). This means he taught about the laws that set up how a country is governed. He retired from teaching in September 2013.
In 2015, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. This is a very respected group of experts. He officially joined in November 2016, giving a speech about federalism, which is a way of organizing a country with different levels of government.
Later Political Views
Later, Francesc de Carreras became critical of the "Citizens" party, especially its leader, Albert Rivera. Rivera had been one of his students. In 2019, Carreras warned that Rivera was putting the party's interests ahead of Spain's interests. He felt Rivera was acting like a "capricious teenager."
In July 2019, Francesc de Carreras announced that he had left the "Citizens" party. He disagreed with the party's decisions to oppose the PSOE (another political party) and to form alliances with far-right groups.
