Albert Rivera is a Spanish former politician. He was the leader of the Citizens political party from 2006 to 2019. He also served as a member of the Parliament of Catalonia and later the Congress of Deputies.

Early Life and Education
Albert Rivera was born in Barcelona, Spain, on November 15, 1979. He is the only child of Agustín Rivera and María Jesús Díaz. His father's family was from La Barceloneta, a working-class area. His mother moved from a small town in Málaga when she was 13.
Albert spent many summers in his mother's hometown. Later, his parents started their own business. They moved to La Ametlla and sent Albert to a private school.
Albert was a talented swimmer. He won Catalan swimming championships when he was 16. He also played water polo for the Granollers team.
He studied law at ESADE, which is part of Ramon Llull University. He finished his degree in 2001. He also earned a master's degree in constitutional law in 2002. As part of an Erasmus scholarship, he studied for a year in Finland at the University of Helsinki. He also took a course in political marketing at the George Washington University.
Albert became interested in politics during university. He took part in a debating competition, which sparked his interest.
Professional Career
After finishing his university studies, Albert Rivera started working. In 2003, he became a legal advisor at La Caixa, a savings bank. He worked there until 2006. He left his job when he became the president of the Citizens party.
Political Career
Albert Rivera was chosen as the president of the Citizens party in July 2006. This happened during the party's first meeting. He was re-elected as president in 2007 and again in 2011.
Rivera was first elected to the Parliament of Catalonia in 2006. He stayed a member until 2015. When he launched the Citizens' campaign in 2006, he used a unique way to get attention. He appeared in campaign leaflets with a message about caring for people, no matter their background or language. The Citizens party is against Catalan independence. This means they want Catalonia to remain part of Spain.
In 2017, he was invited to a special meeting called the Bilderberg Group. This meeting took place in Chantilly, Virginia.
On November 11, 2019, Albert Rivera resigned from his role as party president. He also left politics completely. This decision came after the Citizens party lost many seats in the general election the day before. He decided to focus on his personal life instead.
Life After Politics
After leaving politics, Albert Rivera returned to working in the private sector. From March 2020 to February 2022, he worked at the law firm Martínez-Echevarría. He became an associate there.

Personal Life
Albert Rivera has a daughter with the singer Malú. Their daughter was born in June 2020. In July 2023, it was confirmed that Albert Rivera and Malú had separated.
