Catalan independence facts for kids
Catalan independence is a big idea in Catalonia. It's a political movement that wants Catalonia to become its own country. This means separating from Spain and a small part of France. People who support this idea are called separatists.
The idea of Catalan independence started a long time ago, in the 1800s. Supporters believe Catalonia is a unique "nation." It has its own special language, called Catalan language, and a rich Catalan culture.
For many years, especially during the time of Francisco Franco, Catalans faced difficulties. Their language and culture were not allowed to be used freely. But recently, more and more people want Catalonia to be independent. In 2012, a huge protest happened in Barcelona. About 1.5 million people marched to show their support.
Most politicians in Catalonia's parliament want people to vote on independence. This vote is called a referendum. About 55% of people in Catalonia identify as separatists. The special flag of the Catalan independence movement is called the Estelada flag.
