Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Francesco Turini (born around 1595 – died 1656) was a talented Italian composer and organist. He lived during the early Baroque period, a time when music became very grand and expressive.

Who Was Francesco Turini?

Francesco Turini was born in Prague around the year 1595. His father, Georgio Turini, was also a musician. Georgio was a singer and played the cornet at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. This means he worked for the Emperor, performing music for him and his guests.

Early Life and Musical Start

Francesco learned music from his father. He must have been very good, because he became a court organist at the young age of 12! This was a big job, playing the organ for the Emperor's court.

What Kind of Music Did He Write?

Francesco Turini wrote many different types of music. He created:

  • Madrigals: These were songs for several voices, often about love or nature.
  • Motets: These were sacred songs, usually for church services.
  • Masses: These were longer pieces of music written for the church service called the Mass.
  • Trio Sonatas: These were pieces for two violins and a special bass instrument called a basso continuo. The basso continuo would play the bass line and fill in the harmonies.

Turini's music helped shape the sound of the early Baroque era. He died in Brescia, Italy, in 1656.
