Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Captain Francis Bartelo was an important ranger who served during a time of conflict called Father Le Loutre's War. He was a trusted officer under Edward Cornwallis, a key leader in Nova Scotia. Bartelo arrived in Halifax with Cornwallis's group on a ship called the Merry Jacks.

Early Missions and Trust

Captain Bartelo was known for being a reliable and brave officer. In February 1750, he successfully captured a priest named Jacque Girrard and several Acadians. These individuals had been involved in the Siege of Grand Pré, an important event during the war.

After another conflict, the Battle at St. Croix, Captain Bartelo also captured Acadians who were involved in the death of Cornwallis's messenger. His actions showed his skill and dedication.

A Respected Officer

Edward Cornwallis had great confidence in Captain Bartelo. In March 1750, Cornwallis wrote that he could trust Bartelo as a "good officer, and an honest man." This shows how highly Bartelo was regarded by his commander.

Because of his strong leadership, Bartelo received more responsibilities. In April 1750, he was put in charge of all the independent companies in Nova Scotia. Later, in September, Cornwallis gave him command of Gilman's rangers, another important group of soldiers.

Final Battle and Legacy

Captain Bartelo played a key role in several military operations. In August 1750, he was the commander at Fort Sackville. He also served as the second-in-command during the Battle at Chignecto.

The Ambush

On August 26, 1750, Captain Bartelo and his men faced a difficult situation. A group of 35 Mi'kmaq and Acadian fighters ambushed them. During this surprise attack, Captain Bartelo was killed, along with six of his men. Seven other soldiers were captured. The capture of these soldiers had a strong impact on the New Englanders fighting in the area.

Even after Bartelo's death, Cornwallis continued to praise him. In September 1750, unaware of what had happened, Cornwallis wrote that Bartelo was a "good officer" with "prudence, activity and courage." Captain Francis Bartelo is remembered as a brave and trusted ranger who served an important role in the early history of Nova Scotia.
