Francis Buchholz: Early Life and Music Journey
Francis Buchholz was born in Hanover, which was then in West Germany. He found his love for rock music when he was 11 years old.
His first time playing bass in public was at age 15. This was during a high school event. After that, he played in many rock, blues, and jazz bands. These bands were all in his hometown of Hanover.
While studying engineering at the University of Hannover, Francis also took music classes. He joined a band called Dawn Road. This band included guitarist Uli Roth.
Joining the Scorpions
In 1973, the musicians from Dawn Road and the Scorpions joined together. This formed a new version of the Scorpions band. Francis Buchholz became their bass player.
His first album with the Scorpions was Fly to the Rainbow in 1974. He stayed with the band for 18 years. During this time, they recorded 12 albums. This was when the band became very successful.
The Scorpions sold over 15 million records in the USA alone. They sold more than 100 million records worldwide! Francis received over 50 gold and platinum awards for these sales.
He left the band in 1992. This was because of a disagreement about how the band was managed. His last album with them was Crazy World. He helped write one song on that album, "Kicks After Six".
Music After Scorpions
After leaving Scorpions, Francis Buchholz continued making music.
In 2005 and 2006, he toured with Uli Roth again. In 2008, he worked with the band Dreamtide. He played bass and helped produce their album, "Dream And Deliver".
In 2012, Francis toured with Michael Schenker. Michael was also a former Scorpions lead guitarist. This tour was called "Temple of Rock - Lovedrive Reunion Tour". Other former Scorpions members, like drummer Herman Rarebell, also joined. They released a live DVD and CD from this tour.
Francis played bass on Temple of Rock's album "Bridge the Gap" in 2013. They toured Europe, Mexico, and South America. In 2014, they toured Japan and Europe. Their album "Spirit On A Mission" came out in 2015. The band then toured the USA, Japan, and Europe.
Francis Buchholz: Personal Life
In 1978, Francis Buchholz started a company in Germany called Rocksound. This company rented out sound systems and stage lights. He started it to help distribute special speakers he had created. It also gave jobs to the Scorpions' road crew when they were not on tour.
Francis lives in Hanover with his wife, Hella. They have a son and twin daughters. In 1996, Francis wrote a book called Bass Magic. He has also worked as a record producer and a music consultant.
