Sir Francis Godolphin (1540–1608) was an important English politician and knight. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He was known for his work in Cornwall, especially for improving the defenses of the Isles of Scilly and making tin mining more efficient.

About Sir Francis Godolphin

Sir Francis Godolphin was a key figure in Cornwall during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He took over his uncle's family lands early in the Queen's reign. People in Cornwall respected him greatly. A historian from that time, Richard Carew, said Sir Francis was known for his strong beliefs, fairness, good leadership, and generosity.

Protecting the Isles of Scilly

Sir Francis followed in his father's footsteps by becoming the Governor of the Isles of Scilly. These islands were very important for England's defense. Queen Elizabeth I asked him to make the islands stronger against attacks.

He did a great job improving the defenses. He used his own ideas and money to build better forts. The most famous of these was Star Castle, which still stands today. This castle was built to be both strong and comfortable.

Improving Tin Mining

Sir Francis was also very clever when it came to tin mining in Cornwall. He came up with new ways to get more tin out of the ground. His inventions helped extract metal from materials that people used to throw away. This made the tin mines much more productive.

His improvements helped Cornwall become richer. They also increased the money that the Queen's government received from tin.

Public Service and Roles

Sir Francis served his country in several important ways:

  • He was a Member of Parliament for Cornwall in 1588–1589.
  • He was also a Member of Parliament for Lostwithiel in 1593.
  • He served as High Sheriff of Cornwall twice (in 1580 and 1604). The High Sheriff was a top law enforcement officer in the county.
  • He was the Custos Rotulorum (chief keeper of the county's records) for many years.
  • He was also the Vice-Warden of the Stannaries from 1584 to 1603. This role involved overseeing the tin mines and their workers.

Family Life

Sir Francis Godolphin married Margaret Killigrew. Her father was Sir John Killigrew. Margaret's mother was Mary Wolverston, who was known for her adventurous life.

Sir Francis had two sons who also became Members of Parliament:

His daughter, Thomasine, married George Carew.

After his first wife passed away, Sir Francis married Alice Skerret (1545–1632). She was from Tavistock, Devon and was the widow of Sir John Glanville.

In Fiction

Sir Francis Godolphin appears as a character in the historical novel The Grove of Eagles by Winston Graham. In the book, he is shown as a helpful and understanding person. The story focuses on his first wife's family, the Killigrews. Sir Francis warns them that their reputation for breaking rules and their general lawlessness could lead to their downfall. He does this both because he cares about his family and because he believes in law and order.
