George Carew was the second son of Thomas Carew. His family lived in a place called Antony in England. His brother was Richard Carew, who was also a well-known writer.

Early Life and Education

George Carew went to Oxford University to study. After that, he joined the Middle Temple. This was a special place where people learned to become lawyers. He also traveled to other countries.

Working for the Queen

Queen Elizabeth I thought highly of George Carew. She made him a knight. This was a special honor. She also suggested he become a secretary to Sir Christopher Hatton. Sir Christopher was a very important person in the Queen's government.

Later, George Carew got a promotion. He became a Master in the Court of Chancery. This court dealt with legal matters. He was then sent as an ambassador to the King of Poland. An ambassador is someone who represents their country in another country.

George Carew was elected to Parliament several times. He represented different areas. He was a Member of Parliament for St. Germans in 1584. He also represented Saltash in 1586, 1588, and 1593. Later, he was an MP for St. Germans again in 1597 and 1601.

On July 23, 1603, he was made a knight again at the Palace of Whitehall. This was a big event. He tried to get a job working for Anne of Denmark, who was the Queen.

George Carew's Family Life

George Carew married Thomazine Carew. Her father was Sir Francis Godolphin. George and Thomazine had two sons and three daughters.

  • Francis Carew was their oldest son.
  • Louisa Carew married a man named John Houston.
  • Sophia Carew was the mother of a famous lady called La Belle Stuart.

Thomazine, or Lady Carew, was a special helper to Anne of Denmark. She was a lady-in-waiting. The Queen sometimes gave her gifts of clothes she had worn. For example, in 1610, she received a black satin dress. Lady Carew also walked in the Queen's funeral procession in 1619.

George Carew's Writings

During the time of King James I, George Carew worked on important talks with Scotland. For many years, he was also the ambassador to France. This meant he represented England at the French court.

Relation of the State of France

When he returned from France, he wrote a book called Relation of the State of France. This book described what France was like at the time. It also included descriptions of the important people at the court of Henry IV. This book was later published in a larger work by Thomas Birch in 1749.

A Relation of the State of Polonia

Another book, A Relation of the State of Polonia, was once thought to be written by Carew. However, in 2014, a researcher named Sobecki found out the real author. It was actually written by John Peyton. This was discovered through Peyton's own letters and another copy of the book.
