Richard Carew came from an important family in Cornwall. He was born in East Antony, Cornwall, on July 17, 1555.
His Education
Richard went to Oxford University. He studied at Christ Church college there. Some famous people, like Sir Philip Sidney and William Camden, were also students at the same time. After Oxford, he studied law at the Middle Temple in London.
His Writings and Translations
Richard Carew was a talented translator. He translated the first five parts of a famous Italian poem. This poem was called Jerusalem Delivered by Torquato Tasso. His translation was thought to be very good.
He also translated a book from Spanish. It was called Examen de Ingenios by Juan Huarte de San Juan. This book tried to connect how our bodies work with how our minds work.
His Famous Book
Carew was part of a group called the Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries. This group studied old things and history. He is best known for his book, Survey of Cornwall, published in 1602. This was one of the first county history books ever printed in English. It shared many details about the history and life in Cornwall. Later versions of his book were printed in 1723, 1769, and 1811. He also wrote an essay about how great the English language was. It was called Epistle concerning the Excellencies of the English Tongue.
His Public Service
Richard Carew also served his community. He was the High Sheriff of Cornwall two times. This was an important job, like a main law enforcement officer for the county. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Saltash in 1584. An MP helps make laws for the country.
His Family and Hobbies
Richard Carew was married to Juliana Arundell. Her father was Sir John Arundell. Richard and Juliana had a son, also named Richard Carew. This son later became a baronet.
Richard Carew had some interesting hobbies too. He was a beekeeper, which means he took care of bees. He also loved to go fishing.
His Later Life
Richard Carew passed away on November 6, 1620. He was buried in Antony church the very next day.
