Sir Richard Carew, 1st Baronet (born around 1580 – died 14 March 1643), lived in Antony, Cornwall. He was a British writer and a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

Life and Learning

Richard Carew was the oldest son of a famous writer and historian named Richard Carew (1555–1620). Young Richard went to Oxford University, likely Merton College. He also studied law to become a lawyer at the Middle Temple in London.

Richard was quite an adventurer! He traveled to different countries like Poland, Sweden, and France. He visited Poland and Sweden as part of a special trip with his uncle, who was an ambassador. In France, he worked with another ambassador, Sir Henry Nevill.

A Career in Politics

In 1614, Richard Carew became a Member of Parliament for Cornwall. This was a big responsibility, as he represented the people of his area in the government. Later, from 1621 to 1622, he also represented another area called Mitchell.

Writing and Ideas

Sir Richard Carew wrote several books. One of his interesting works was about how a "warming stone" could help sick and elderly people feel better.

His most important book was called True and readie Way to learne the Latine Tongue. This book shared ideas from three smart authors from different countries about the best way to learn Latin. Richard Carew was the English author for this book. It was published in 1654, after he had passed away. People thought his famous father had written it, but it was actually his own work! The book suggested that the best way to learn Latin was by translating words back and forth, with only a little bit of grammar teaching.

Becoming a Baronet

On 9 August 1641, Richard Carew was given a special title: a baronet. This meant he was given a hereditary title by the King, making him "Sir Richard Carew, 1st Baronet." He held this title for less than two years before he died on 14 March 1643.

Family and the Civil War

Sir Richard Carew was married twice. His first wife was Bridget Chudleigh. They had one son named Alexander, who later inherited his father's baronet title. They also had four daughters.

After Bridget passed away, Richard married again to a woman from the Rolle family. They had at least two more sons, John and Thomas.

A Family Divided

The English Civil War (a big fight between different groups in England) caused a lot of trouble for the Carew family. It happened just two years after Sir Richard died.

  • His son, Sir Alexander, supported the King (he was a Royalist). Sadly, he was punished for his actions and died on Tower Hill.
  • His other son, John, supported the Parliament (he was a Parliamentarian). John was even part of the court that decided the fate of King Charles I. After the war ended and the King's family returned to power (this was called the Restoration), John was also punished for his role in the King's death.

The Civil War truly divided the Carew family, with brothers on opposite sides of a major historical conflict.
