Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Francis Goodwin (1564–1634) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, at different times between 1586 and 1626.

Goodwin was the son of Sir John Goodwin and Anne Spencer. In 1586, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire. He was also elected MP for Wycombe in 1589.

From 1591, he worked as a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Buckinghamshire. A J.P. helps keep law and order in a local area. In 1596, he helped organize soldiers as a commissioner for musters. He inherited land in Upper Winchendon in 1597. That same year, he was elected MP for Buckinghamshire again. He was given the title of Knight in 1601.

Goodwin's Case: A Royal Challenge

In 1604, Sir Francis Goodwin was elected as an MP for Buckinghamshire. However, his election was challenged because of a legal issue. This led to a big disagreement known as "Goodwin's Case."

A Clash with King James I

This case was a major argument between the House of Commons and King James I. The King believed he had the final say on who could be an MP. But the House of Commons felt they should decide who their members were.

The Outcome of the Dispute

Eventually, the King's decision was overturned. This meant the House of Commons won the right to decide on their own members. Even though his first election was cancelled, Goodwin was elected again later that year. He became the MP for Buckingham in a special election.

Later Political Career

Sir Francis Goodwin continued his work in politics. He was elected MP for Buckinghamshire again in 1614. In 1618, he passed on his family estate in Upper Winchendon to his son, Arthur. He was re-elected as MP for Buckinghamshire in 1621.

Around 1623, he received an official grant from the King for his inherited land. From 1623 to 1624, he served as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire. This was an important local role, like a chief officer for the county. He was elected MP for Buckinghamshire two more times, in 1625 and 1626.

Family Life

Sir Francis Goodwin married Elizabeth Grey. She was the daughter of Arthur Grey, 14th Baron Grey de Wilton. Their son was named Arthur Goodwin. Sir Francis Goodwin passed away in 1634, at about 70 years old.
